January 2009 - Program highlights Elecraft K3
January's program will be ELECRAFT FOR EVERY HAM, presented by John Lyon, W9LHG. The Elecraft K3 transceiver was introduced the previous year at Dayton. Since then, magazine and internet reviews - and word of mouth - have made the radio very popular, delivering outstanding performance at a reasonable price point. After a brief review of Elecraft and its previous products, the presentation will concentrate on the K3's features, and the rig in actual operation for the average ham. John will have his K3 (serial #647) at the meeting for inspection.
John, the Left Handed Gorilla, really is Left Handed. He has been a ham since 1954, and Extra since '71. Mainly a HF CW op, John is stuck at country #96 toward DXCC at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, with 5 watts and a wire antenna. John grew up in Illinois, but has lived in the Twin Cities for the last 30 years. Married for 48 years to Virginia, they have three grown daughters. John also enjoys jazz and classical music, photography, and his lake place in Wisconsin.
