SARA February 2010 program - Terrain Coverage Modeling for VHF/UHF using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data

Join SARA members on Saturday February 13th at 9AM at Boutwells Landing Town Hall Meeting Room, 5600 Norwich Parkway, Oak Park Heights (Stillwater).

The presentation will cover the basics of important antenna characteristics and deployment and "line of sight" radio communications related to odd and even order Fresnel zones and diffraction effects.

The 1st order Fresnel Zone and diffraction mappings related to the terrain that VHF/UHF radio signals traverse, are significantly important in determining coverage.

The presentation will illustrate this using a sophisticated software package which is widely used to model coverage patterns for repeaters and other very high frequency services such as wifi networks, microwave communications and cell phone networks.

Shuttle Radar Topography Mission elevation data will be used for depicting the terrain and plotting the RF coverage. The presentation will illustrate the process used to map out and model the coverage design for the new W0JH repeater system deployed in April 2009.
